Literacy
- Draw your favourite character from the story and add a written description.
- Ben talks about a clove hitch, which is a kind of knot. Try learning several different kinds of knots and what they could be used for. Practice at least three until you are proficient at tying them. Make a board displaying your knots.
Maths
- Make your own treasure map up using symbols instead of words. Allow someone else to try and figure it out. How well did they do?
Art
- Make a model pirate ship and share a photo of it on @KKPSBookChatNZ twitter.
Social Sciences
- Research pirates. What were they like?What was life like for a pirate? Do they still exist?
- What exactly is a Jolly Roger. Investigate the history around the flag we know as the Jolly Roger. Where did it come from? What does it mean?
- Research cannibals. What are they? What sets them apart from other people? Where were cannibalistic peoples located during the 1700s?
- Discover the differences in flintlock guns and the guns of today. Gather pictures of various flintlock pistols and muskets and compare them with what guns look like today. What are some of the differences? What are some of the similarities?
Science
- Long John had a parrot that he said was about 200 years old. Do you think this was true? Learn about the life cycle and habitats of parrots, how they mimic words, what they eat, how long they live, etc.
